How to Learn a Foreign Language Fast

The fastest way to learn a foreign language is total immersion with a native speaker who is an exceptional teacher and has a well-developed methodology. Unfortunately, that is outside the scope of possibilities for most people. With technology, however, you can create a virtual classroom. Whether you simply want to be able to say the appropriate greetings in a business meeting or you want to speak a language fluently, there are ways to learn your target foreign language quickly. You need to read, write, speak and listen to the language every day. The more time you spend studying, the faster you will learn the language.

Set a fluency target and identify benchmarks. Suppose, for instance, that your goal is to speak French in two years. Specify that by the end of six months you want to be able to carry on simple conversations in the present, past and future tenses. Within a year, you will be able to conjugate the "passé simple."

Find a class. Check with community colleges, cultural centers and universities in your area and see if they are offering Swahli this term. Check to see if the schools offer German as a distance education option.

Advertise for a Portuguese tutor. Run an ad in the local newspaper, pin a notice to the community bulletin board or advertise on the Internet.

Decide if you are going to buy a commercial program to fast-track your way to speaking Farsi or if you will design your own course of studies. For a DIY Spanish course of studies, look for sites that offer grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and tests.

Start a daily diary in the language of choice. Find a free translation program that also has a "voice" component. Type the sentence, listen to it two or three times and then write it in your journal. Write a page a day.

Find a newspaper of the language you want to learn and make it the homepage on your computer. Read the news -- out loud -- when you turn on your laptop.

Watch Russian television and only listen to Russian radio. News channels are particularly good, because you can watch the way the presenter moves her mouth. Check out YouTube pronunciation lessons in Greek.

Check local shops to see if they stock contemporary Danish hip-hop music or if they will order it for you. Only listen to music in your target language, and practice listening to the rhythm. Memorize the words -- or download the lyrics -- and sing along.

Talk to yourself in Urdu. As you learn the vocabulary, begin to compose short sentences. Eventually they will expand to paragraphs and short stories. If you don't want people to think you are strange, wear headphones and they will think you are talking on your cellphone.
