How to Learn to Read a Foreign Language

If you are planning to study or work abroad, learning how to read the language of the country you are traveling to may be necessary. In addition, reading the literature and news of a country in the language everyone speaks will make you more culturally aware. It is important to immerse yourself in the language if you want to learn how to read it in a short time. Practicing with a native speaker is ideal but if that is not possible, there are several other strategies you can use to learn to read a foreign language.

Instructions

    • 1

Create phonics drills so you can practice the sound of each letter in the alphabet of the language you are trying to learn. Ask a native speaker or someone who knows the language to record herself sounding out each letter of the alphabet. Use the recording to repeatedly read and associate a sound with each letter.

    • 2

Find simple newspaper articles on a subject that interests you written in the language you want to learn. Set up language translation software on your computer and work through deciphering the article with the help of the language translation software. Sound out each word as you read it. Read the article repeatedly until you can successfully connect each word to a meaning and understand the flow of the content.

    • 3

Take notes as you read and write down your interpretation of the text. Discuss your interpretation with someone who reads and understands the language. Ask him to explain the cultural context when necessary.

    • 4

Create daily vocabulary drills so that you can increase your vocabulary over time. Use a language dictionary to write down 10 words and their meaning. Practice reading and writing those 10 words every day for one week until you can identify and understand them when reading.

    • 5

Immerse yourself in the language by practicing reading texts from different genres, as a scientific text differs from a fictional account. Expose yourself to as many writing styles as possible to expand your level of reading comprehension over time. Read large volumes of very simple texts before graduating to slightly more complex texts. Practice reading for a set amount of time every day.
