How to Establish a Baseline for Academic Intervention

Deciding when to intervene with a student's academic career is a process that can make the difference between a successful recovery or another student drop-out. Selecting the exact moment for intervention is best assessed on a case-by-case basis, but where the number of students precludes independent assessment you can always use an objective standard.

Instructions

  1. Subjective Method

    • 1

Examine the student's average grades for the previous few semesters. Calculate a grade point average to establish a baseline for the student's typical performance.

    • 2

Monitor the student's grades each semester.

    • 3

Intervene academically and institute probation or counseling, if the student's grades deviate more than 10 percent below baseline.

    Objective Method

    • 4

Choose an arbitrary grade point measure for academic intervention, such as 2.5 or 2.0 on a four-point scale.

    • 5

Monitor the student's grades each semester.

    • 6

Institute intervention proceedings whenever a student's average for the semester drops below the set level.
