Apply for re-admission with the Office of Admissions. Explain your situation to an admissions officer and complete the re-admission application as required. Request an academic amnesty application if you have been absent from FIU for a minimum of six years and have not attended any other higher academic institution. Academic amnesty allows you to pick up with your college education with a 0.0 grade point average (GPA) and will not consider your previous GPA. Skip to step four if you were not dismissed from the college or received a deferment.
Apply for re-admission if you were academically dismissed. Wait one full year before re-applying. Prepare to adhere to the academic probation policy of FIU. The policy puts you on probation for a specified period of time where your GPA must be maintained at a certain level. Check with admissions officers as to how the academic probation policy will apply to you. Dismissal from FIU will occur if you hold a cumulative GPA for two consecutive semesters below a 2.0.
Contact the Department of Health Services to confirm registration of grounds for your previous deferment -- if this case applies to you. If you left school after one semester for professional reasons and obtained a deferment, for example, re-admission may be expedited. Consult with an admissions officer for details pertaining to your situation.
Look through the FIU catalogue of academic programs. Continue with courses pertaining to your previously declared major or change course with a new major and register for courses required for that field of study. Consult FIU financial aid officers for concerns related to scholarships and financial aid.
