How to Learn Danish Fast

Whether you are planning a long stay in Denmark or have fallen in love with a Dane, you can learn to speak Danish fast even as an adult. Spoken by about 6 million people, Danish is typically easier for native English speakers to learn than many European languages due to the grammatical similarities between the two languages. Learning correct Danish pronunciation, however, is a bit more challenging, since words are rarely pronounced in the same manner that they are written. By far the biggest obstacle in mastering Danish is the daily discipline required. Once you conquer that, the rest is fairly enkle, or simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a Danish language software program and follow it as consistently as possible. Daily use of Danish language software is a convenient and effective way to nail down the basics of the language.

    • 2

Enroll in a Danish course. Since Danish is a less common language than, say, Spanish or French, finding a Danish course in your area may difficult. For serious Danish students, your best bet is to enroll in a Danish immersion course in Denmark. Log onto the official website of Denmark's Danish language page (see Resources) for course options, including private language schools and adult learning centers.

    • 3

Hire a Danish tutor to improve your skills. Many local language tutors list their services on sites such as Craigslist. Another option is to use an online Danish tutor to provide live feedback on your language progress.

    • 4

Participate in a free conversation exchange by meeting every week with a Danish speaker who wants to improve her English. For half of the meeting you and your partner will speak Danish and for the other half you will speak English. Check local language schools or Craigslist. If you cannot find a Danish speaker in your area, log onto the My Language Exchange website (see Resources below) and go to the search function to provide information about your language needs. Language exchanges are available via email, text or voice chat.

Listen to Danish radio. An essential part of language learning is listening, and regularly listening to Danish radio will continue to familiarize you with the sounds of the language and keep it fresh in your mind. At the end of each session with your conversation partner, log on to Danish radio and listen for about 20 minutes. To help build your vocabulary, write down any words or phrases that are unfamiliar and look them up. Access Danish radio stations online by logging on to the Multilingual Books' Danish radio page (see Resources).

Read Danish news articles by logging onto onlinenewspapers.com and selecting Denmark.
