How to Make Bibliography Cards for an Article

A bibliography is an important part of any research paper. Basically, a bibliography is the part of the paper that lists all the references that you used to find the evidence and facts that backed up your main points and conclusions within the paper. Sometimes, with an assignment, an instructor will require that you make bibliography cards for various articles that you cite for the paper. These cards can then be easily alphabetized and used to type out your bibliography page.

Instructions

Format each of your sources properly. Refer to your instructor's specific guidelines or the specific guidelines of the style you are using. The exact formatting will depend on the style and type of reference. For example, a magazine article in MLA style would be formatted as follows: Author's last name, author's first name. "Article title." Publication city: Name of publisher underlined Date the article was published: Page numbers article appears on.

Use pencil when making the bibliography cards. Once your instructor checks them over, you may need to make corrections. Erasing small errors is easier than rewriting the entire card.

    • 3

Write out each of your references in proper format on individual note cards according to the style you're using. Double check to be sure you are properly formatting each source as you write it down.

    • 4

Alphabetize your bibliography cards according to the first letter of the first piece of information on the card. For example, if the last name is first, this is what you use to alphabetize the cards. If all you have is the article title, then use the first word in the title other than "The," "An" or "A."
