How to Make a Bibliography for Cartoons

Bibliographies can be challenging. For standardization, readers and teachers like to have a particular syntax. The syntax differs by element, though. Knowing how to cite a book in a bibliography doesn't help you cite a cartoon. Whether the cartoon comes in the form of a comic book, comic strip or stand-alone cartoon image, citing it simply requires the right formatting.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the authors and artists' names in brackets with last names first. After each, put "w" for the writer, "i" for the illustrator and, if applicable, "p" for the penciller (ignore this if the cartoon was done by one person). End in a period:

[Jones, Bob (w), Henderson, Frederick (i), Franklin, Ronald (p).]

    • 2

Put the cartoon title in quotes. End in a period:

[Jones, Bob (w), Henderson, Frederick (i), Franklin, Ronald (p).] "The Sandman."

    • 3

Put the series name with an underline (if applicable):

[Jones, Bob (w), Henderson, Frederick (i), Franklin, Ronald (p).] "The Sandman." Spiderman

      Note: Underline not shown.

    • 4

Follow it with the issue or installment number (if applicable) and date in parenthesis:

[Jones, Bob (w), Henderson, Frederick (i), Franklin, Ronald (p).] "The Sandman." Spiderman #42 (Aug. 1954)

    • 5

Put a comma, followed by the publisher:

[Jones, Bob (w), Henderson, Frederick (i), Franklin, Ronald (p).] "The Sandman." Spiderman #42 (Aug. 1954), DC Comics

    • 6

Put in the page number (if applicable):

[Jones, Bob (w), Henderson, Frederick (i), Franklin, Ronald (p).] "The Sandman." Spiderman #42 (Aug. 1954), DC Comics, p.54.
