How to Make a Clip for a Pencil

Inventor Victor Ochoa solved a centuries old writing dilemma when he created the first fountain pen in 1900. Shortly after, he patented the clip that attached to the pen or pencil to keep people from misplacing the innovative pen he designed. A simpler model of the pencil clip can be fashioned from a few basic household items within minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Large paper clip
  • Exacto knife or carving knife
  • Craft glue
  • Soft tip pliers (optional)
  • Paper towels

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a thin notch into the wood at the top of the pencil using the knife of choice. The notch should be about the same width as the paper clip.

    • 2

Place a thin line of craft glue into the pencil notch.

    • 3

Unwind the large end of the paper clip using a soft tips pliers. This can also be done by hand if the paperclip feels pliable enough.

    • 4

Wrap the unwound end of the paper clip tightly around the notch in the pencil while the smaller end lies flat against the length of the pencil.

    • 5

Wipe off excess glue and allow to dry.
