Classroom Discipline Plans for Middle School

Trouble in the classroom not only has a negative consequence on the students involved, it requires teachers and other student personnel to get involved, which takes them away from those who aren't involved in the trouble at hand. A strong discipline plan in your classroom can help to minimize the negative impact of these situations on other students and may even help curtail troublesome issues in your class.
  1. Teacher Awareness

    • Awareness can help teachers avoid issues by allowing them to predict where trouble may arise. By incorporating teacher awareness in the disciplinary plan, it's possible to avoid reaching the level where disciplinary action is required. Implement regular training to help teachers monitor and detect possible problems with students as they enter the classroom. Teachers who are more in tune with their students may be able to spot when a student is behaving differently or in such a way that it is possible the student may have issues. Teachers can pull the child in question aside to speak with him or allow him to visit the school counselor.

    Student Rules Meeting

    • Sponsor a reading of the rule book on a monthly basis to refresh students about the rules of the school and to ensure that all new students are up to date. This is an opportunity to reiterate the rules and address any updates. Include the students in a discussion during these times and take questions from them regarding the rules and the consequences of breaking those rules.

    No Tolerance

    • Develop a list of no-tolerance policies and distribute these to students. The no-tolerance list should include rules regarding drugs, violence, bullying, abusive language and school attendance. Along with this list of rules, detail the consequences of breaking any of the rules.

    Layered Plan

    • Develop a layered plan (with exceptions for no-tolerance infractions) that begins with a verbal warning, then a phone call to parents, an office visit and, finally, removal from the classroom.
