Lesson Plans for Middle School P.E. Classes

Encourage your students to be physically fit and to engage in regular physical activity by planning engaging yet simple lessons that they enjoy. Tap into your students' competitive nature with races, or encourage them to work with other students to achieve goals. Most importantly, make your physical education classes fun for everyone.
  1. How Many Steps?

    • Use a pedometer for a walking exercise. Ask students to line up on one side of the gym. Give each student a pedometer, or separate the students into groups if you do not have enough pedometers for all students in your class. Ask students to guess how many steps it will take to walk to the other side of the gym and back. After students have made their predictions, encourage them to perform the task. Next, ask students to see who can move across the gym and back with the fewest steps, or the most. Experiment to see how jogging, skipping or galloping changes the number of steps needed to cross the gym.

    Basketball Races

    • Practice dribbling and passing a basketball with races, recommends the website PE Central. Ask students to divide into pairs and give each student a basketball. Encourage students to walk or run across the gym; the student with the basketball should dribble as he moves, racing his partner. When students have completed this task, encourage them to try a crossover dribble. Next, encourage students to leave one ball on the ground and bounce pass the ball to one another as they move across the room, racing the other students in the class. Practice the chest pass and overhead pass as well.

    Jump Rope Competition

    • Engage students in a heart-pumping jump rope competition. Give each student a jump rope. Let students practice jumping rope for a few minutes. Once students are warmed up, begin the competition by seeing which students can jump rope for two minutes without becoming too tired or tripping over their rope. Next, ask students to count as they jump and see who can make it to 100 jumps first. Try using longer ropes for group jumping as well.

    Class Aerobics

    • Let your students become the teachers with an aerobics class. Get the class started with simple moves such as walking in place, kicks or back kicks, all done to the beat of fast-paced music. Once students are warmed up, invite them one at a time to come to the front and lead the class for a few minutes of aerobics. Complete the session with a cool down and stretches.
