How to Build a Backdrop for Winterguard

Winter guard is a variation of the more commonly known color guard, which consists of a team of participants who create displays using dancing and the artistic movements of the flags they carry. These guards typically accompany sporting events and school marching bands. Winter guard teams or clubs have the same concept, except the productions and performances are held indoors, due to the colder winter season. A backdrop for the winter guard team can be used as an eye-catching accompaniment to the artistic movements. The backdrop can be composed of fabric or of paper, depending on what you intend to mount in on.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out a brightly colored rectangle of fabric that is at least several yards long and a few yards wide. A thick fabric, such as felt, works best. The ideal backdrop provides a background for the range of movement of all the winter guard members during the performance.

    • 2

Select a theme for the backdrop. The theme could illustrate the season, represent the sport for which the winter guard is performing, or simply be an artistic display of color and design.

    • 3

Cut out shapes and designs from a felt that is a different color than the main background piece and glue them onto the large, background piece of fabric. This could mean snowflake shapes, basketballs, a school mascot or simple polka dots, depending on the theme for the event and the backdrop. Miniature flags that mimic the ones held by the winter guard members are an effective choice as well.

    • 4

Trace bubble or block letters onto another piece of felt. Spell out words of encouragement for the team playing or words that reflect school spirit. For example ,"Go Springfield Falcons" or "Central High School Eagles Athletics" are appropriate choices. Glue the words onto the backdrop.

    • 5

Hang the backdrop on the wall behind the space where the winter guard performs. The backdrop can also be hung on rope. Fold over a flap about 1 to 2 inches wide along the top of the backdrop and glue it down to create a loop. String a rope through the looped flap to hang.
