How to Build a Beehive for a Science Project

A natural beehive is a mathematically perfect creation developed exclusively by honey bees. The basic structure of a beehive can be replicated with simple craft materials, and studied scientifically in order to discover how the structure of the beehive is ideal for the livelihood of the bees. In order to make a beehive structure, it is important to follow a few simple guidelines that will ensure the stability of your creation.

Instructions

    • 1

Stick a gum drop on either end of a toothpick.

    • 2

Stick a second toothpick at a 120 degree angle into one of the gum drops.

    • 3

Stick a third toothpick at a 120 degree angle out of the other gum drop.

    • 4

Place a gum drop on the open ends of the 120 degree toothpicks.

    • 5

Stick another toothpick at a 45 degree angle onto one of the gum drops you place on the 120 degree angled toothpick. Repeat this on the other 120 degree angled toothpicks.

    • 6

Place a gum drop onto each open end of the 45 degree angled toothpicks.

    • 7

Insert a toothpick in between the gum drops you just place. This will complete a basic hexagon shape. Repeat this entire process to make a second hexagon shape.

    • 8

Place one of the hexagon shapes onto a flat surface.

    • 9

Hold the second hexagon shape over the first, lining up the sides.

    • 10

Insert toothpicks into the gum drops to connect the two hexagons together. This will create the first cell of the beehive.

    • 11

Repeat the entire process until you have created six completed beehive cells.

    • 12

Place two beehive cells together, side by side.

    • 13

Insert toothpick into the gum drops in between the two cells, connecting them together. Repeat this with the remaining cells to complete the beehive.
