      Learn the music map.

Music is written on a grand staff that is divided into two parts--treble staff and bass staff--that each have 5 lines surrounding 4 spaces. The placement of notes on these lines and spaces tell the musician which keys on the piano to play. Notes written higher on the staff are played higher (to the right)on the piano. Notes written lower on the staff are played lower (to the left)on the piano.

      Learn note values.

Notes are drawn differently to depict how long they are to be held down. In primer music, the quarter note gets 1 beat, the half note gets 2 beats, the dotted half note gets 3 beats, and the whole note gets 4 beats.

      Learn note location on piano.

Each key on the piano corresponds to a note written on the staff. A good point of reference is middle C. To find middle C, sit in front of the center of the piano. You will probably see a manufacturer name on the instrument somewhere above the keys. Find the groups of 2 black keys just below the name, and play the white key directly to the left of the black ones. Once you can find middle C, you can figure out how the other notes match up with the notes on the staff.

      Be patient.

It took you more than just a few weeks to learn to speak English. It will take a while to learn the language of music. Use what you learn as often as possible, build on the fundamentals little by little, and you will learn to turn those music scores into beautiful melodies!
