Gantry Crane Operator Training

Gantry cranes are a type of heavy machinery that requires extensive training to operate properly and safely. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is responsible for designing proper gantry crane operation procedures.
  1. Coursework

    • There is a specific course regimen that must be pursued to qualify for gantry crane operator certification. "Cranes and Rigging Safety for Construction" is just one of the courses prospective gantry crane operators must pass before being considered for certification. After passing necessary coursework and testing, applicants become qualified to operate gantry cranes.

    Facilities

    • There are dozens of OSHA training facilities across the United States including: Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood, Colorado; the National Safety Council in Omaha, Nebraska; Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana; and Georgia Tech Research Institute in Atlanta, Georgia.

    Operations

    • Students are taught about proper gantry crane operations during their training phase. They learn to consult a crane's load limit (traditionally located on the side of the crane) before they employ their crane to hoist a workload. An audible noise should be sounded before performing lifts nearby other workers. If a load is moved too quickly, it can sway. This creates more hazards in the workplace; crane operators are trained to prevent sway and move workloads at a safe pace.
