About Forklift Operator Training Schools

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that all employees that will be operating a forklift must be properly trained. This training must cover instructions and warnings for the forklift as well as include the opportunity to operate a forklift in a controlled environment. Training instructors must be knowledgeable and experienced in the operation of forklifts and in training people to operate them.
  1. Forklift Operator Duties

    • Forklift operators primarily operate the equipment to move large or heavy objects from one place to another. Other duties of a forklift operator may include taking inventory of the items being moved and labeling them, as well as keeping a record of the inventory. Some forklift operators load or unload trucks in warehouses or distribution centers. Others work in factories or other industrial workplaces.

    Schools

    • Forklift operator training may come from a vocational school or through employer-sponsored training. Students who attend a vocational school learn how to operate a forklift and how to perform basic maintenance and repair. Employer-sponsored courses are taught by companies that specialize in OSHA-compliant training. These courses often only last one day and are performed at the worksite. Online courses are also available for students who are not able to attend a vocational school or do not work in a place that provides forklift training.

    Courses

    • Forklift operator training courses come in many forms. New operator courses often last between three and five days and cover all forklift operations. Refresher courses are available for those who need to renew their certification and typically last just one or two days. Students must be at least 18 years of age to operate a forklift. Once the course is completed, the student receives a certificate.

    Certification

    • Legally, forklift operators are not required to hold a certification to perform their job. Most employers prefer operators who are certified because of their increased knowledge of forklift operations. Employers may offer certification training that can be completed within a few months of hire or may require a new hire to become certified by attending an outside course. Certifications last for two years and then must be renewed by taking a certification refresher course.
