OSHA crane training involves specific coursework and testing. One can only become OSHA certified to operate, rig and inspect cranes in America after successfully completing coursework and passing the required testing outlined by OSHA. One of the courses required for OSHA crane inspection, operation and rigging certification is, "Cranes and Rigging Safety for Construction."
OSHA sponsored crane operation, inspection and rigging training is available at the ECRI Institute Headquarters in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. Training is also available at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky. There are facilities that offer OSHA training in the Great Lakes region, including Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. In the Pacific Northwest region, training is available at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington.
The goal of OSHA is to create a safe work environment for the American public. Improperly rigged workloads and mishandled cranes pose serious risks to the safety of nearby workers and the crane operator. During OSHA training, students are taught to recognize crane weight limits, identify properly rigged workloads and a host of other safety measures that contribute to a safe work environment.
