How to Learn Functional English

Learning functional English is a twofold process. Learning in classes will help you improve formal language and the basics of English. You also learn by speaking and listening, which will help you to understand colloquial phrases and how non-formal language works. By combining these two approaches, you will be able to learn functional English, whether or not you are in an English-speaking country (although your English will improve faster if you immerse yourself in an English-speaking culture.)

Instructions

    • 1

Take an English class in your local area to learn the basics. Contacting your local British embassy or consulate will allow you to find English teaching wherever you are in the world.

    • 2

Watch English-language television, which will rapidly improve your ability to understand English at speaking pace. Choose shows which you enjoy watching in your own language, as this will make this exercise more enjoyable.

    • 3

Find a native English-speaker to practice your English through conversations. This can be done either by asking friends if they know of anyone, or by placing an advertisement on a listings website. If you can find someone who is learning your language, then you can chat for half the time in English, and half the time in your native language.

    • 4

Move to an English-speaking country once you are confident in your basic abilities. Forcing yourself to speak English regularly will rapidly improve your functional English skills, such as ordering in restaurants, traveling within the country and attempting to find work. There is no substitute for practicing, meaning that going to an English-speaking country is the best option you can take.
