Practice the appropriate English vocabulary for your goals. If you need English for a job, you can find materials that will help prepare you for the particular demands of your job. Some language schools and community education centers offer specialty classes in such subjects as English for law, business, medical terminology, academia and international communication. You can also find courses for accent reduction. If no such classes are available in your area, you can find books and websites with similar content.
Use authentic materials. Language learning materials are helpful for reaching an intermediate level of English, but to become proficient you must challenge your skills by using authentic language materials. Authentic materials are English-language media intended for consumption by native speakers, rather than language learners. Look for authentic materials in topics that interest you. Consuming television, movies, books, magazines, podcasts, radio shows, websites, theater and music in English will enable you to advance your language level while learning about something of interest to you. Find a book club, discussion group or volunteer organization where you can interact with groups of native English speakers who share your interests.
Speak as often as possible. As a language learner, it is important to continue to develop the active skill of creating your own sentences. Generating your own sentences and expressing yourself spontaneously are different skill sets than the passive skills of reading and listening. Take advantage of any opportunity to practice with native English speakers. If you are taking an English class, participate regularly in class discussions. Make friends with native speakers. Speak English as much as you can with family members even if you usually speak another language at home.
