How to Learn English & Tagalog

About 1 billion people are learning English, and Tagalog is the first language of approximately 15 million people in the Philippines. Around 75 percent of the population of the Philippines understands Tagalog. English is helpful to know as it is one of the leading global business languages, and Tagalog is a commonly-understood language in a country with a population that speaks around 80 languages.

      Visit the Philippines, and take a course in Tagalog. English is also a widely-spoken language in the country, so you can practice both languages during your daily interactions both inside and outside the classroom. Another option is to visit the Philippines to learn English, and then to attend an English course in an English-speaking country. Immersion is thought to be the best and quickest way to learn any language.

      Utilize online language learning lessons to learn English and Tagalog. English text lessons are available for free at EnglishClub.com, among many other websites. Tagalog can be learned from a website such as the SEAsite.niu.edu Project from Northern Illinois University.

      Rewind and watch videos in either language as many times as you need to understand parts that were difficult. Watch the speakers' mouths in the videos to pick up on pronunciation. Listen for words new to you. Listen to words around them that you know and try to guess the meaning from the context.       Listen to both languages as much as possible. Listen to the news in both languages. The BBC.co.uk and Voice of America (VOAnews.com) have special English learner sites that have news stories both in audio and text format. Find Tagalog radio online at the IHeard.com or MultilingualBooks.com websites.

      Join an online language exchange such as MyLanguageExchange.com or ITalki.com. Learn English and Tagalog from native speakers through online and voice chat. Ask your language partner to correct grammar, word choice and pronunciation when you meet. And meet regularly to learn as quickly and as much as possible. You may have to offer classes in your language to other learners on some language exchange sites in order to attend English or Tagalog courses offered by other language students.
