Harvard University is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston. Established in 1636, Harvard University is the oldest American institution of higher education. Amherst College is situated in Amherst, Massachusetts, about 90 miles directly west of Boston. This college was founded in 1821 and has since then become one of the most notable liberal arts colleges in America. Students of Amherst College have access to over 36 programs that can lead towards a Bachelor of Arts degree. They can have more than one major or create their own or choose independent scholarship. This college is part of a consortium that has a cooperative agreement with four other colleges. This consortium allows Amherst College students to have access to the programs offered at Smith, Holyoke and Hampshire Colleges as well as the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. There is a free bus system linking the five campuses, which are within a 10-mile radius of Amherst.
Wellesley College is located in the town of the same name, about 12 miles west of downtown Boston. This college is another one of America's most highly selective private liberal arts colleges. It was founded in 1870 to specifically offer higher education to women. Enrollment at this relatively small but well-known institution is still only open to females. Students at Wellesley College have access to many different degree programs. Undergraduates have a choice of over 52 majors.
