Alternatives to Rosetta Stone

Rosetta Stone is a popular language learning software. The company sells different levels for each language so that you can learn basic language for a vacation or become fluent in a language. The biggest problem with Rosetta Stone is the cost. Expect to pay, as of 2011, anywhere from $200 to $600 for individual levels or sets. There are several cheaper alternatives to Rosetta Stone. Some of them are completely free.

    • Byki is language-learning software that teaches you words and phrases of a language so that they are locked into your memory. Users can create new word and phrase lists that can be shared with each other. There are 74 languages to be learned through Byki including Afrikaans, Arabic, Hungarian, Finnish and Zulu. Byki Express is a free program that is downloaded on your computer and can be used without limits. Upgrade to Byki Deluxe for $70.

    LiveMocha

    • LiveMocha is an online community that teaches and learns together. There are free beginner courses for over 30 languages including French, English, Spanish, German and Hindi. Paid courses are per month or year and may include reviews by tutors. Cost is between $20 and $150. The community lets others teach you in return for you teaching them. You grade and review work others have done in your native language and you get graded by others, too.

    Foreign Service Institute Language Courses

    • The courses listed at this site are from the Foreign Service Institute (FSI). It is a government program that was developed to teach government personnel required languages for a job in another country. All of these courses are in the Public Domain and volunteers have gathered them together in one place for others to use. The courses include written text and audio programs. Download the courses and learn at your own pace.

    Mango Passport

    • Mango is essentially the same as Rosetta Stone, but with a lower cost. You pay for one program instead of a few levels. The teaching method is similar to Rosetta Stone but also focuses on the cultural aspects of the language you are learning. As of 2011, Mango Passport costs $150. There is an audio program called Mango On The Go that costs $100. Both can be purchased for a bundle price of $200.
