How to Evaluate the Rosetta Stone Language Learning

Rosetta Stone is a software-based language learning program designed by Allen Stoltzfus in the 1990s. The program immerses learners in a new language not with translation or memorization, but rather through word-picture association. The simplicity of the program's design allows even children to use it. Completing the software program is easy, but at the end you will want to evaluate how much of the new language you have picked up.

Instructions

    • 1

Set language-learning goals for yourself before you begin the Rosetta Stone program. Learning a second language can be a long process, and you may feel like you aren't gaining any ground if you can't speak fluently yet. Set some tangible goals such as learning 300 words and 20 sentences in the new language. Add new goals as you go along.

    • 2

Create a spreadsheet to keep track of your quiz results at the end of every section in the Rosetta Stone program.

    • 3

Complete the Rosetta Stone language program and all associated levels, recording your quiz results as you go along.

    • 4

Write down a list of all the new words and sentences you learned from Rosetta Stone and see if you met your goals. Look over your quiz results and see if you can find any consistency in the scores. If your scores were usually low, retake the quizzes to see if you can improve your scores.

    • 5

Immerse yourself in the new language by reading books, newspapers, watching movies, listening to music and conversing with native speakers either in-person or over the Internet. See if you are able to pick up on words and phrases. Ask native speakers if they can understand you and if your accent is improving.

    • 6

Try other language software programs and compare your success with them to your results with Rosetta Stone.
