One of the main character skills that homeschooling teaches is respect. Respect is more difficult to monitor and control in traditional schools, especially when there are various misbehaving students. Yet in homeschooling there is more personal, face-to-face interaction and a students cab be taught individually to act in the proper way. For example, parents generally have less tolerance for foul language and inappropriate behavior and their presence ensures that personal respect is always upheld.
Responsibility is another important character life skill that is often difficult to track and judge in over crowded classrooms. In homeschooling, on the other hand, parents are able to focus and check on the progress of their students and can ensure that they are learning and appreciating the value of responsibility. In homeschooling, there are a wider range of daily activities during which to observe students' daily behavior and appropriate level of responsibility.
In homeschooling, the value of relationships can be emphasized. Students need to learn how to maintain a caring relationship with themselves, their family and their friends. In the family setting of homeschooling, caring for others is given much more emphasis and priority. All of these lessons will serve them well in later life when they establish their own relationships with others.
Study skills are difficult to evaluate in traditional schools as there is often not enough time and attention to ensure that the individual student has learned the best and most effective methods of study. Various home schools have taken on a new strategy that focuses on "self-teaching" methods. Although the teacher is there as a guide, he ensures that the student is learning by herself and that she is building up her own particular and effective study skills.
