How to Write Fractions in Radical Form

In mathematics "radical" is a term that is used loosely to refer to the entire expression consisting of radical sign and radicand. A radical sign or radicand is a symbol placed over a number or expression, the square root symbol. It is used to indicate a root of the radicand. Expressing a fraction in simplest radical form means that you must simplify a radical so that there are no more square roots, cube roots or 4th roots left behind. Your answer will be expressed in either fraction, decimal or whole number form.

Instructions

  1. Find the Radical Form

    • 1

Write down the fraction you wish to put in radical form.

    • 2

Simplify the fraction down as low as you can, this may end up yielding a whole number. You can simplify a fraction by finding the highest common denominator, or the highest number that both the top and bottom number of the fraction can be divided by. Once you find that number and divide both numbers you will have your fraction in simplest form.

    • 3

Write down your simplified fraction or the whole number that was derived from the original fraction and put it under the square root symbol. This is your fraction in simplest radical form.
