How to Write in Essay Form

Many classes in college ask for a written essay. Whether it is on a test or as a take home assignment, writing an essay can sometimes fill a student with dread. However, it doesn't have to be so scary. In fact, it is pretty straight-forward. One common type of essay is the five-paragraph essay. This type of essay consists of an argument played out in five paragraphs. If you come up with a well-honed thesis statement with good support, you will have a fine essay written in no time.

Instructions

Compose a thesis statement on a topic. This is a statement of position on the topic that is narrow, clearly defined and something that can be argued. It is the basis for the entire argument of the paper, so take time to make this statement as sharp as possible.

    • 2

Think of three solid reasons why your thesis statement is true. These are your supporting paragraphs. Find research to support these reasons to make your thesis statement seem more believable. If you are not writing a research essay, then think of good facts, logic or stories to support your reasoning.

    • 3

Compose a paragraph introducing the topic to be discussed and include the thesis statement within it. Introduce your argument and any explanatory facts you have about the topic.

    • 4

Compose three paragraphs that support your thesis statement. Use one of your supporting reasons per paragraph and support the reasons with your research evidence.

    • 5

Compose a concluding paragraph that reflects on your arguments and restates your thesis statement. Bring your argument to its natural conclusion, but do not introduce any new information.
