Michigan GED Programs

The General Education Development test (GED) is a national standardized exam taken by people seeking a high school equivalent certificate of education. The subjects covered on the test are reading, writing, science, math and social studies. With most testing programs in Michigan, you must be at least 16 years old and have not attended school for one calendar year to qualify.   1. Southeast Michigan

    • Marygrove College of Detroit will provide you with free GED prep-classes and testing if you become a member of their learning resource center, which requires at least seventh-grade reading and math skills. The Marygrove GED prep classes feature the latest technology in the classroom and personal tutoring to help further your education. A professional staff of educators will teach you the skills necessary to find a job after completing your GED, such as preparing a resume, finding job leads and using successful interview techniques.

    Central Michigan

    • Mt. Pleasant Community Education (MPCE) has classes to prepare you for the GED free of charge. In addition, you may take the GED test itself for free, if you take the prep-classes first through MPCE. There are steps involved before you can take the final GED test. The program requires orientation, a GED pretest and a Test of Basic Adult Education (TABE) before moving on to your final exam. Testing for the GED is offered for free only once, so any retest will result in a fee of $35 for each skill area you need to retake. If you do not have a high school diploma and are at least 18 years old, you are eligible to take your GED through MPCE.

    Northern Michigan

    • The University Center at Gaylord Michigan provides GED preparation and testing in Gaylord and at has an outreach program at the Cheboygan Area Public Library. This program has specific choices to assist you in preparing for the GED exam, including study material in the library center, books for sale, computer software and personal tutors. These advanced learning options make the University Center at Gaylord GED course ideal if you feel your skills need sharpening before attempting to take the actual test. You will be required to take the TABE test first as part of the centers Intake Session for a fee of $50. Once you are ready for the GED exam, you will be charged $25 for each of the five skill tests.

    Upper Peninsula

    • Consolidated Community School Services (CCSS) operates GED preparation and testing sites throughout the Upper Peninsula. Classes are only provided during the regular school year, and you must enroll in a prep class before taking the actual GED test. Because of its vast geographical area, CCSS offers programs in 10 communities throughout the Upper Peninsula on a variety of days and at various times.
