SER Metro-Detroit, Jobs for Progress, Inc. offers GED-preparation courses for Detroit residents who are 18 to 21 years old. ("SER" is an acronym for service, employment and redevelopment.) Students in the program take a diagnostic test and are given personalized curricula based on their areas of weakness. The SER GED program allows students to learn at their own pace and use a technology-based curriculum to focus on areas of weakness. If additional help is needed, tutors are available for assistance.

The Marygrove Learning Resource Center (MLRC) provides free GED preparation, courses and testing for eligible individuals. Eligibility requirements include being able to read and solve math problems at a seventh grade level or above and meeting other state and/or city eligibility requirements. The program consists of one-on-one tutoring and computer-assisted instruction.

The Grand Rapids Adult Education Center offers free GED-preparation classes to students age 20 and older. The program helps student develop the necessary skills to pass the the five subject areas of the GED--writing, science, social studies, arts, and literature--and students are able to take the GED test at a reduced fee. Classes are available in the mornings or evenings, and the Center provides free bus tickets for those who need help with transportation.
