Some tests, such as the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, are used in many states. Some states develop their own tests. There is no mandated national standardized test.
Standardized tests are used to rank students for competitions for scholarships and entrance into advanced classes and college. Standardized tests are also used to rank schools, evaluate teachers and principals, and to determine which schools receive government funds.
All students take the same test under the same conditions. The tests are timed and teachers are not allowed to help students. All states must give standardized tests to students according to the No Child Left Behind Act.
Because of the emphasis placed on the results of standardized testing, many students approach tests with feelings of anxiety. This anxiety may cause physical illness in some children. Other effects of test-taking anxiety include development of a poor self concept and lack of confidence.
In order to relieve stress and anxiety teachers may teach students test-taking strategies such as doing the easiest problems first. Fun activities for the periods in between tests allow students to release some of the tension they are feeling.
