The Community College of Philadelphia offers credit and noncredit programs for adult learners. The Adult Basic and Literacy Education (ABLE) program is for adults ages 17 and older. It offers free classes to help adults develop basic math, reading, and writing skills. Following the completion of this program, you will be ready to enroll in the General Education Development (GED) preparation classes. The GED class will also build your reading, writing, and math skills and prepare you for the test to earn your diploma. Gateway to College is a program for students between the ages of 16 and 21 who have dropped out of high school. This program allows you to earn your high school diploma while simultaneously earning college credits. The Community College of Philadelphia also offers an institute for English language learners as well as many other adult education programs.

The Community Learning Center, established in 1987, helps adult and teenage learners to develop math, literacy, and life skills. It offers Adult Basic Education (ABE) and GED preparation courses at no cost to students. During orientation, instructors assess students' reading skills and place them in an appropriate class for their level. Classroom teaching includes one-on-one instruction, group instruction, and independent study. The center also supports and guides you when you are transitioning to vocational training, employment, or post-secondary education.

Through the Mayor’s Commission on Literacy, The Free Library of Philadelphia offers you adult education and language development programs. Programs available to you include Adult Basic Education, Pre-GED, GED, Reader Development, and English as a Second Language. You may take classes at seven neighborhood library branches throughout Philadelphia. Adult learners may also participate in distance learning. The Distance Learning Project (DLP) provides educational opportunities to adult learners who would like to prepare for the GED test, develop workplace skills, or improve their literacy or math skills. To be eligible to participate in these programs, you must be 16 years of age or older.

Multiple alternative education options are available for youth and adults through the School District of Philadelphia. The Educational Options Program (EOPs) provides students ages 17 and older the opportunity to complete their high school diploma by attending afternoon classes. Students may also participate in an accelerated high school program that allows them to earn their diploma in less than three years. In addition, the School District of Philadelphia provides GED and literacy programs as well as an adult diploma program for individuals over the age of 21.
