Founded in 1993, the Certified Floorcovering Installers Association is an organization of professional and members of the flooring industry who aim to provide training and certification to prospective carpet installers. The organization employs a team of 79 trainers who have provided carpet installation training and certification to more than 40,000 installers as of 2010. Hands-on training by skilled installers as well as certification is provided in the areas of residential installation, commercial installation, and master level installation which includes all levels of installation. Along with training programs, CFI hosts a number of events where installers can receive small-group training at which higher certification is awarded, should the installer demonstrate their proficiency. With associates in all 50 states, membership in the Certified Floorcovering Installers Association is strong and connects installers with a network of other professionals as well as companies in the floorcovering industry.
Founded by trainer and instructor P.J. Arthur in 1967, the Natural Fiber Installer Certification school offers programs focusing on the installation aspects of natural fiber carpets. The programs teach specialized installation techniques for natural fibers such as wool, sisal, and sea grass, to ensure proper seaming and application. Training programs at NFIC include one day general knowledge seminars, a certification and training program for inspectors, a master installer program, and a special two-day training and certification program specifically for tufted and woven wool carpets. NFIC also provides general knowledge seminars and training to sales professionals, as well as inspection and on-site assistance to installers in the field.
With more thanr 100 members as of 2010 and certified by the labor departments of the United States and Canada, the International Standards and Training Alliance was founded in 1990 and offers training programs for residential, commercial and institutional floor-covering. INSTALL has provided training to more than 10,000 professional installers at more than 60 official instruction centers throughout the United States and Canada. Multi-year training programs in carpet installation include classes in carpet history and construction, seaming methods, direct glue carpet installation and carpet repairs. Along with multi-year training programs in various areas of floor covering, INSTALL also offers registered apprenticeship training.
