LED Lighting Courses

LED lighting, or light-emitting diodes, has many advantages over traditional incandescent lighting options, such as long life, durability and cost-effectiveness. If you're considering making the switch to LED lighting or wish to learn more on the subject, several courses are available, including ones that can be taken conveniently online.
  1. LED Lighting Institute

    • The LED Lighting Institute teaches professionals in the lighting industry about LEDs. According to the Lighting Research Center's website, "Each LED Lighting Institute includes updated technical content based on the latest industry developments." The course offers classroom instructions as well as workshops stressing practical application. The material covers the fundamentals of LED technology and LED system integration. The institute also offers a three-day LED Lighting Institute at the Lighting Research Center in Troy, New York, and a two-day on-the-road LED Lighting Institute.

    National Semiconductor

    • National Semiconductor offers an online course on LED technology designed for engineers. According to National Semiconductor's website, the course will "enable engineers to determine a design's key requirements for lighting and choose the right lighting products for application." The material encompasses LED backlighting, flash lighting and fun lighting. The course is 150 minutes long and includes assignments and an online exam. When you pass the final test, you'll get a certificate from National's Dean of Education.

    Lighting Controls Association

    • The Lighting Controls Association (LCA) offers an online course on LED lighting called EE300, Lighting Control of LEDs (see Resources). The LCA includes the course in its Education Express distance education courses, which are taken online. The course is divided into four modules. The first module explains the basics of LEDs and how they work, the second module covers controlling color LEDs, the third module covers the control of white LEDs and the final module teaches the standard applications for LED control. The objective of the course is to give students a basic understanding of LED lighting and to teach them how to incorporate LEDs into modern lighting system design. If the student passes an optional online exam, he will be able to receive education credit for the course. According to the LCA's website, the course is registered with the National Council on Quality in the Lighting Professions (NCQLP), which offers lighting industry certification services.

    The Energy Center

    • The Energy Center of Wisconsin offers a webcast course on LED lighting to "help viewers understand the technology, analyze manufacturer's claims and accurately specify fixtures and lamps." The instructor concentrates on costs including labor and lamp costs, energy costs and light output. The course is also designed to help students evaluate LED products and manufacturers. American Institute of Architects (AIA) members will receive one Learning Unit for taking the course, and the National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions (NCQLP) will receive one Lighting Education Unit for the class. To receive credit, you'll need to earn a minimum of 80 percent on a 10-question quiz. The webinar is $89 and is 54 minutes long. For those who can't watch it live, recorded webinars are available for viewing.
