Export Documentation Courses

International trade transactions require specific transport, administrative, commercial and insurance documents. Your business may need to produce a wide variety of export documentation for export transactions, including commercial invoices, packing lists, air waybills, dock receipts, warehouse receipts, bills of lading, insurance certificates, shipper's letters of instructions, certificates of origin, consular invoices and customs invoices. Export documentation courses teach you which documents you need and when and how to complete them.
  1. United States Government

    • Several agencies in the United States government provide export documentation training. For example, the U.S. Commercial Service helps U.S. companies find new international business partners in worldwide markets through their offices in over 100 U.S. cities. They sometimes offer courses in export documentation, such as "A Basic Guide to Exporting: Export Documentation for New to Export." In addition, they have an export webinar series called "Making Exporting Easier." Topics in this series include how to get your products abroad with proper export documentation. The Bureau of Industry and Security, which is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, offers free online training in a variety of electronic formats. Courses of study include "Export 101," "Essentials of Export Controls," and "Complying with US Export Controls."

    Private Training

    • Many private training companies offer general certificates in export management, certificates specific to export documentation, or seminars in export documentation. Individual courses in certificate series typically include a course addressing export documentation. For example, the Export Institute USA offers a course titled "Shipping Your Products Overseas." A topic in this course covers 12 major international shipping documents, including the certificate of origin. The Global Training Center offers an export training seminar that covers export documentation, such as commercial invoices and dock receipts.

    Colleges and Universities

    • Many colleges and universities offer courses for credit in export documentation as part of a degree program. For example, Broward College in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, offers a course titled "Finance of International Trade" that covers export documentation and procedures. Many colleges and universities also have continuing education programs that offer courses covering export documentation. For example, Broward offers a continuing education course titled "Introduction to Import/Export" that includes documentation.

    Trade Association Courses

    • Various trade associations provide export documentation training. For example, the Southern United States Trade Association (SUSTA) has an exporter education program that provides export training for small to medium-sized agricultural growers and processors who are new to exporting. The American Association of Exporters and Importers offers various webinars, seminars and conferences that sometimes include documentation topics.

    International Courses

    • Each country has its own export documentation requirements. They sometimes have government agencies, local organizations and training companies that provide export documentation courses. There are also global schools that offer export documentation courses. For example, the Export Academy of the Electronic Business School International offers a "Trade and Customs Practice" certificate that includes a "Documentation in International Trade" course.
