Writing Weekend Courses

Because writing can take a long time to become a lucrative career, if it ever turns into one, many writers must work during the week, making it difficult or impossible for them to attend traditional writing courses. However, in response to this need, weekend writing courses have arisen in a variety of different venues, providing authors with the opportunity to polish their craft with like-minded people around the world. Depending on what you are looking for, a particular writing weekend course might fit your schedule's needs as well as your writing goals.
  1. Relaxing Courses

    • Because writers choosing weekend courses are more likely to have busy, stressful weeks, a relaxing trip combined with a writer's workshop can offer several benefits, apart from just giving you time to write. These retreats can range from countryside getaways, such as in the Berkshires or parts of New England, to seaside or spa getaways. While the focus is usually still on the writing, you can stay at a hotel and enjoy the variety of amenities available to you there in between your meetings. These courses may last no longer than one weekend or may run for several weeks.

    University Courses

    • Many universities and community colleges offer writing programs or workshops on the weekends for those who wish to explore writing as a potential career or just for fun. These courses may be offered at several different levels, from beginner to advanced. To be placed in a class, the procedure will vary from school to school. Some may require the submission of a portfolio, while others will trust your own evaluation of your abilities. University classes normally last for a full semester, though summer classes may be shorter. They will usually not take place both Saturdays and Sundays but rather one of the two.

    Author Courses

    • To make a little money in their spare time, or to keep teaching while setting their own schedules, celebrated authors, editors, literary agents, and other professionals often offer short courses for writers. The topics of these courses can range from the actual content of your book to the marketing of it. In most cases, they will take place in the city where the author lives.

    Travel Courses

    • Certain programs will give you access to university faculty or your favorite authors while letting you get away from the usual and explore different areas. For example, several authors offer weekend writing workshops in Paris. Because these still take place on the weekends, however, it is best to have another reason to stay in the city during the week -- even if it is just to explore a new place as a tourist! Due to hotel bills and transportation costs, these are often the most expensive of the weekend writing courses.
