Correspondence Graduate Courses in Writing Instruction

Because writing skills are so valuable in the workplace, many schools offer graduate certificates and courses in writing instruction. Some colleges offer online correspondence writing instruction courses as part of larger programs, while others offer graduate certificates specifically in writing instruction. Correspondence courses in writing instruction are similar to on-campus courses, except that students learn primarily from textbooks and online materials rather than professors.
  1. Rhetoric and Writing

    • Rhetoric and writing programs emphasize two sides of communication: spoken and written. Many of these programs feature writing courses that emphasize writing instruction. The rhetoric and composition curriculum at Bowling Green State University, for example, has a writing instruction course that emphasizes composition style and voice. Indiana's Purdue University also has graduate courses in writing that aim to produce graduates who are competent writing and composition instructors.

    English as a Second Language

    • Teaching English as a second language is a career choice for some arts students. While it is possible to teach ESL with just a bachelor's degree, having graduate education will give you access to even better ESL teaching jobs. Walden University offers a Master of Science in adult learning that gives students the option of choosing adult second language instruction as a specialty. Ashford University and Saint Michael's University both offer Master of Arts programs in English language instruction, including courses in writing.

    Composition Studies

    • Composition studies is a subfield within language studies. Composition studies focus on the how of writing, specifically, how to write compelling written work, especially prose. Because of the subject matter, composition studies graduate programs feature many courses on writing instruction. Indiana University offers a graduate certificate in composition studies that features many courses on writing instruction. The certificate is a 15 credit -- five courses -- program that can be completed in one semester.

    Reading Instruction

    • Programs in reading instruction usually feature at least one or two courses on writing instruction in addition to the main curriculum. The reason for this is that reading and writing are highly interrelated skills. The reading instruction graduate program at Arizona State University, for example, features several courses on writing instruction. Some of those courses study the relationship between reading instruction and writing instruction, while other courses are specifically dedicated to writing instruction.
