Correspondence Courses in Civil Engineering

Civil engineers design and build roads, bridges, buildings and other elements of infrastructure. A bachelor's or master's degree is usually required to work in this field. Some schools offer correspondence or online courses in this engineering field. Schools offering online engineering degree typically offer the master's degree, designed with the professional engineer in mind. Students usually take courses online or through a series of video lectures received via DVD or videoconferencing.
  1. Civil Engineering Distance Master's Courses--University of Florida

    • The College of Engineering at the University of Florida offers engineers an opportunity to study civil engineering courses at the master's degree level through correspondence. The school uses videoconferencing and DVDs as its preferred method of delivering course content to correspondence students. Students taking correspondence courses through the University of Florida can receive a master of engineering degree in general civil engineering. Students take two courses at a time each semester until they have completed a total of 30 credit hours. One course is taken during each summer term. Courses include studies in construction engineering, geo systems, public works planning, engineering project management, construction planning and scheduling, and traffic engineering.

    Open Courses--M.I.T.

    • Students wanting to take correspondence courses in engineering, but not necessarily wanting to pursue a degree, can take advantage of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's open courseware. These courses provide students with an opportunity to study civil engineering at either the undergraduate or graduate level for free. These courses present a perfect opportunity for those in the engineering field who want to use them as continuing education courses and for professional development and further expertise. Courses are offered with various instructional methods that include lecture notes, multimedia presentations, examinations and other materials accessed online. Undergraduate courses include studies in areas such as transport processes in the environment and mechanics of material systems. At the graduate level, students can pursue courses such as Water and Wastewater Treatment Engineering, Regional Socioeconomic Impact Analyses and Modeling and Water Resource Systems.
