Some medical schools recognize the fact that many doctors are going to need to write or otherwise be familiar with clinical writing protocols at some stage in their career. The University of Hawaii's medical school, for example, offers a clinical protocol writing program that teaches students the raw skills involved in writing these pieces of work. These courses are generally taught by medical professors who have a wealth of theoretical knowledge and research experience, in addition to years of teaching experience.
There are also private, freelance providers that give seminars and tutoring on writing clinical protocols. These tend to be taught by people who come from backgrounds reading and writing clinical protocols, although they may not necessarily be as formally-qualified as the doctors in courses offered at colleges. However, a private tutor usually has an empirical track record in the form of a list of satisfied clients and successful clinical protocols, which is not necessarily the case with those offered by educational institutions. Educational institutions focus on the raw skills involved in writing clinical protocols. Rather than focusing on the minor details such as precisely what is in a protocol, they focus on the bigger-picture skills of how to research, how to express yourself and how to present a clinical protocol. Assessment is common and a mock clinical protocol is often written in the course of taking one of these classes. Graduates should leave with the ability to independently research for a clinical protocol and write it in an effective, efficient manner.

Private clinical protocol courses have much more specific content. Rather than teach the high-level skills, they focus on one clinical protocol at a time. A teacher in these courses will work with a doctor or other medical researcher to ensure that his clinical protocol follows all of the ideals mentioned in section 3. Basically, they capitalize on the fact that they have these skills so that medical researchers don't have to acquire them.
They also apply it in an up-to-date manner. Since educational courses are more "evergreen," teaching skills that should last an entire career, the laws, rules and regulations that the course teaches are only current when you take the course. So, if you take a clinical protocol writing course in 2010 in your final year of medical school, you still may need a refresher course by a private instructor in 2015 or 2020 when your career has progressed and you need to write a clinical protocol.
