Select a test or tests in a subject area with which you are familiar.
Study for the test. There are online study guides as well as library resources to help students prepare for CLEP tests. Even though you already have knowledge of the subject area, brushing up by studying available resources for the particular test will ensure that you score well.
Arrive at the testing center on time and complete the test or tests. You will be given an opportunity to designate a particular school or agency to receive your test scores. If you have not yet selected a school, you may have transcripts sent directly to you.
Review your school's catalog of courses. Degree programs generally require basic coursework, electives and degree-specific courses.
Select a course or courses for which you already have a significant level of knowledge.
Review your school's policy in regard to challenging courses. Most schools allow students to challenge, or test out of, basic or elective courses.
Follow your school's specific instructions regarding challenging courses for credit without actually attending classes. Steps usually include meeting with the professor who teaches the specific course.
Follow instructions carefully. Arrive at the designated time and place punctually. Complete the test or other requirements specified. For instance, when challenging a public speaking course, a student may be required to give a presentation rather than take a test.
Prepare for English and math placement tests. Many schools require placement testing to make certain that students begin at their level of proficiency in these core subjects.
Take online practice tests. There are many online sources of practice tests for English and math. Make certain to access the website of your specific school.
Seek a tutor or engage in independent study to increase your skills in areas in which you are weak. Spending a little time to prepare for the placement tests can save you a lot of time when you place out of courses and do not have to take them at all.
