How to Get a Degree in Communications

Obtaining a degree in communications can lead to a career in many different fields. Public relations specialists typically hold a degree in communications. Other fields like education, sales, advertising and marketing, journalism, theater, government and just about any other area where interpersonal communication skills are necessary. Prominent universities like the University of Pennsylvania, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Kansas offer well-respected degrees in this field, but many other lesser-known schools also offer degree programs in communications.

      Complete your high school education. Most high schools do not offer a wide array of communications courses, but taking additional courses in English, a foreign language, theater or speech can help you with your studies later. It will probably not make a difference in getting accepted to one school over another.

      Research and apply to schools of interest to you. Most colleges require that you submit a paper or online application, an application fee, copies of your high school transcripts, letters of recommendation and your scores on a standardized exam like the ACT or the SAT. All schools have different requirements regarding which students are admitted and which are not. Researching schools beforehand can help you avoid applying to schools for which you are not qualified.

      Enroll in classes and complete your general education requirements. During your first two years of college, you can expect to complete classes in a wide variety of fields. These are required to take so that you will obtain a well-balanced education across a wide range of disciplines. Courses usually include English composition and literature, college algebra or some other math class, biological and physical science courses, U.S. and world history, humanities, speech, psychology and any other area that is a part of the general curriculum emphases of the school.

      Complete the courses required for your communications major. These can include a wide variety of courses in the field of communication or a more narrow focus if your school offers one. Some schools' communications programs require a minimum GPA on your undergraduate coursework before they will let you pursue studies in the major, so keep your GPA as high as possible during your first two years of study. The number of hours required in the communications major will vary. The University of Kansas, for example, requires 33 credit hours, while the University of Iowa requires 36 hours. Courses generally include core courses in areas like introductory speech and communication and studies in rhetoric. Other courses are communication theory and communication skills. Courses can include areas like relational communications and organizational communications.
