The program does require a short visit to the campus and some time in the field.

Some programs require partial attendance on-site while others offer full completion online. A Web-based course in Archaeology is currently offered to enrolled students through the Department of Anthropology. The senior-level course addresses methods scientists use to evaluate evidence in order to draw conclusions about the past. Atlantic International University, based in Honolulu, Hawaii, caters degree requirements to individual students seeking a bachelor's, master's or doctorate in Archaeology. The university also offers customized degrees in the arts, administration, science and philosophy.
The University of Leicester offers a full bachelor's degree in Archaeology by Distance Learning. The program still requires a short visit to the university located in central England and additional hands-on fieldwork at sites to be determined. Leicester also offers flexible opportunities for adults to earn a Master's Certificate in Archaeology as well as a research doctorate in Archaeology and Ancient History. Leicester's website offers flexibility and low cost options for the travel required for program completion. For student convenience, there are three start dates offered each year although space is limited in each module.
The Archaeological Institute of America is a non-profit organization that hosts a website to increase public interest global archaeological discovery. The institute facilitates a lecture program free to the general public and individuals can attend presentations given by professionals in numerous cities across the U.S. The institute posts fieldwork opportunities for students and volunteers. Most field sites charge a reasonable fee for accommodations that also helps fund their projects.
