Colleges for EMTs & Firefighters in NYC

Emergency medical technicians and firefighters in New York City are not required to hold a college degree; however, the necessary training courses to receive EMT or certifications can be completed at many community colleges. These programs are typically open to the public and emergency personnel, so applicants do not need to meet college admission requirements. These courses offer the additional benefit of counting toward college hours for EMTs or firefighters who do wish to pursue an undergraduate degree, while firefighting or EMT courses completed at medical centers or the FDNY Fire Academy are not valid for college credit.
  1. LaGuardia Community College EMT Certification

    • LaGuardia Community College is a two-year public school located in Long Island. It is a member of the City University of New York system, and offers an EMT-Basic program students complete in four months. The EMT-B certification at LCC focuses on providing pre-hospital emergency care to patients, including vital sign monitoring, injury treatment and CPR administration. Graduates receive a certification from the American Heart Association and New York State endorsement upon successful completion of the EMT-Basic certification test.

    Firefighter Certification College Program

    • The Division of Fire Science at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, a division of the City University of New York, is the only college that offers the complete fire academy course all NYC firefighters must pass in order to become certified. The fire academy course can be completed as an individual program or as part of a college undergraduate degree program in protection management offered by the City University of New York. Any applicants to the NYC fire department who do not attend John Jay College must enroll in the FDNY Fire Academy.

    John Jay College EMT Certification

    • John Jay College offers five emergency medical technology certification classes. The Emergency Medical Technician - Basic program offers eight hours on ambulance training and eight hours emergency department training, in addition to certification in Weapons of Mass Destruction Awareness, FIT certification to operate respirators and the New York State certification. These features make the EMT-B program at JJC the most comprehensive in the state of New York. EMT students seeking to diversify their career options may wish to pursue the firefighter certification program also offered by John Jay College at the same time.

    Additional Certification Options

    • St. John's University Emergency Medical Services Institute offers an EMT-B Challenger Refresher course for additional instruction and training in individual areas of weakness for knowledge and proficiency. Although the main campus is located in Fresh Meadows, all clinical experience sites are in Manhattan and the Bronx. Current EMTs seeking a higher level of certification should consider the two-year associate paramedic program offered by the Borough of Manhattan Community College, St. Francis College or St. Joseph's College.
