Ascertain if your institution has a panhellenic council or other committee that regulates Greek organization. Otherwise, visit the office of student development to request information about the guidelines for organizing a sorority. Obtain a colonization application and any other paperwork required to be submitted.
Complete the application or forms, which vary depending on your institution. Normally, you must identify the national sorority for which you would like to organize a chapter. Also, identify staff or faculty members that have agreed to advise the organization of the sorority and willing student officers (e.g. president, vice president, secretary and treasurer) that will serve until permanent officers are elected. Submit the application to the appropriate office or committee.
Submit the application with proof of interest among unaffiliated students, such as letters or signatures attesting to students' intention to pledge the sorority. Also, submit a letter expressing how the sorority will serve the college and advance the mission of the institution.
Request that the dean of student development or panhellenic council member petition a national sorority organization on the students' behalf.
Meet with a representative from the national organization. Have all prospective chapter officers attend the meeting so the sorority representative can determine if the students meet the profile for the organization. Officers must demonstrate high academic caliber, extra-curricular involvement and commitment to service and community initiatives for the representative to approve the request and formally extend an invitation to the university to organize a chapter.
Meet with administration, student leaders or anyone else required to approve the application before the decision is passed along to the president of the college or university. Send a formal letter to the president with all the appropriate signatures. The president will then send a letter to the national organization accepting or declining the offer to organize a chapter.
