Read through the school or employer’s mission statement so that your personal mission statement can reflect theirs. Your mission statement should be somewhat generic, but you may want to slightly modify individual personal statements in order to target them to specific schools and organizations. Pay close attention to the school's or employer’s values and goals, so that you have a clear understanding of what they are looking for and what type of words and catchphrases to use in your personal professional statement.

Describe your interest in the organization or school in which you are applying. Be specific in your reasons for applying and why you have a particular interest in this specific school or organization. Briefly describe what you understand the organization’s specific mission, goals and values are and why you think you’d be a good fit.

Describe your personal interest and attributes, which may be useful and beneficial in this particular organization’s environment; if you feel you have something in particular to offer, list your strengths. Use catchphrases and statements from the organization’s mission statement and description when talking about yourself (for example, if the organization is looking for a self-starter, you may list that one of your strengths is being “independent” and someone who works well without supervision). List any experience that pertains to the organization you are trying to join, including any experience you have gained previously. List your weaknesses, but make positive light of those weakness (for example, if you would like to become more detail-oriented, you can list that you need to pay closer attention to detail, but hope that a new start with this organization will help you become better focused). Show any links, even the obvious ones, between you and the organization you are trying to be a part of. Use short, concise sentences and a clear voice.
