How to Write a Personal & Professional Statement

Writing a personal and/or professional statement is both a profitable individual exercise and a crucial part of applying to a wide variety of educational and professional programs. A powerful personal statement may make the difference between your application being accepted or denied. It is quite worth the effort to take the time to do it well.

Instructions

    • 1

Clarify what type of statement the school or other institution requires. A “personal and professional statement” may also be described as a purpose statement, statement of intent or statement of purpose. Furthermore, some institutions require a personal statement that answers specific questions, while others allow its applicants to highlight what they feel is important. Don’t hesitate to request more detailed information if the instructions are unclear.

    • 2

Reflect on your personal and professional goals. Think back on your background, education, life experiences, and personal obstacles, jotting down significant events or themes as you go. Consider what unique gifts and skills you have to offer. Recall your previous jobs, extracurricular activities, education and volunteer experiences. List the qualities you have gained from these experiences.

    • 3

Write down some of the things that provoke you to an emotional response--things you love and hate, principles you are willing to take a stand for, and so on. This depth of emotion is what you should convey throughout your statement.

    • 4

Develop an outline from your notes. If you received a specific set of questions, center your outline around those. If your instructions were more vague, refer to the following general structure and make adjustments as needed. Use the first paragraph of your statement to introduce yourself, summarizing your purpose, background, education and goals. In the second paragraph, explain how your background and goals make you a qualified applicant for the program. The third paragraph should outline a plan of action, stating why and how the program for which you are applying is the most logical way for you to reach your goals. Your fourth paragraph should focus on the specifics of the program, such as individual professors you look forward to learning from or areas of research you intend to pursue. You may wish to add a short conclusion paragraph if necessary.

    • 5

Make your statement stand out. Support your personal and professional statement with examples and short narratives from your own life. Keep in mind that the program for which you are applying will sort through many personal statements. Be detailed, specific and unique so that they remember yours.

    • 6

Express your passions. Talk about what makes your heart beat fast. While the mechanics of your statement are important, don’t lose sight of what makes you love the program you are applying for.

    • 7

Steer clear of controversial areas. A personal statement is not an appropriate time to bring up politics, religion or sexual orientation. Don’t use extravagantly large words or too much humor.
