How to Create a Study Guide Using Color to Help Memorize

Tests and exams require a great deal of effort to fare well on. Come evaluation time, you may find yourself overwhelmed with material spread over several different -- often unrelated -- subjects. If you are at a loss for how to approach this workload, color coding is a viable option. In fact, a 2009 study in Turkey revealed that students with color-coded study guides retained information much more easily and efficiently than those with black-and-white ones. With this in mind, adding color to your studying can not only enhance your grades, but also require less effort and stress.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the material. This will give you specific ideas about what information you need to know and what types of facts need to be memorized.

    • 2

Assign a color to each subcategory. For example, if you are studying history, subcategories can include names, dates, events and definitions. Use your highlighter to mark these accordingly. For example, use blue for names, orange for dates, yellow for events and red for definitions. This will make each one stand out for you to organize.

    • 3

Write the information on your cards. Using your highlighter color scheme, pick out each piece of information and write it on their respective cards. Again, using history as an example, place the blue highlighted names on blue cards, orange dates on the orange cards and so on.

    • 4

Organize your cards in layers according to color. Punch a hole in the top, left corner of your cue cards using your hole-punch. If the pile is too large, separate it into several, small piles to punch the holes.

    • 5

Tie the cards together. Thread the string through the hole in your cue cards and tie a knot. You now have a small, organized study guide you can easily carry with you.
