How to Create a Student Survival Guide Action Plan

College students are thought to be one of the busiest populations in America. Many college students have to juggle the responsibilities of being a student, working, maintaining a social life and living alone for the first time. Individually, these responsibilities seem manageable, but when combined, a student survival action plan is essential to long-term success. There are a variety of ways to go about managing time as a busy student, but planning is key to all of the various methods.

  1. How to Create a Student Survival Action Plan

    • 1

Plan your schedule before school starts. Include time that you are setting aside for yourself, for social gatherings, for work and for school. Once school starts there will be so much going on that you will be unable to get organized. Therefore, the key time to create an action plan is before you actually need it.

Organize your classes in a large three ring binder. Use subject dividers to create a section of the binder for each class. Ensure all important paperwork, such as syllabi, handouts and homework, are kept in the appropriate section of the binder. As long as you have this binder with you, you will be able to quickly and easily figure out what assignments are due and when.

    • 3

Organize your social outings, work schedule and class schedule with a calendar. Some people enjoy utilizing electronic calendars, such as those on PDAs and smart phones. Others prefer to use a large desktop calendar. Choose the calendar that is most convenient and easiest for you to use.

    • 4

Commit to maintaining a manageable schedule. Social networks will likely want you to go out a little more often than you originally scheduled. Your employer will probably ask you to cover an unexpected shift. If new requests will conflict with your previous commitments, such as completing your schoolwork, do not hesitate to say you are unable to fulfill the request. Saying no sometimes is one of the traits of a successful student.

Consider enrolling in a class designed to assist students in acclimating to college if you find that you are struggling to survive college life. Many colleges and universities offer a 1- or 2-credit class designed to assist students in managing their time and employing proper study techniques.
