How to Insulate a Dorm

Half the school year falls during the fall and winter months, and the school dorm becomes a haven from more than just papers and exams - it becomes a haven against inclement weather as well. It's important to safeguard your dorm or apartment against winter's wrath in order to preserve comfort and peace of mind and to focus your mind for long nights of research or studying. Dorms aren't always perfectly maintained, so drafty windows and doors are common - but with a little elbow grease, it's easy to insulate and improve problem areas.

Instructions

  1. Winterize Entryways

    • 1

Apply plastic shrink wrap to the inside glass of the window, either by aid of adhesive or a blow drier. Be sure to fit the wrap from edge to edge on each pane of the glass.

    • 2

Apply tubing or rubber sealing to any exposed cracks or crevices in the window. Measure and cut the tubing to the appropriate length and apply to indoor window edges and sills.

    • 3

Hang thick, layered curtains along each window. Specially made blinds and shades can also be used to defeat drafts.

    Minimize Door Drafts

    • 4

Measure the door length and fit a fabric snake along the door bottom. Rolled up towels or rice-filled tubes can also be used.

    • 5

Install a storm door. Have it professionally fitted and installed to ensure maximum draft and weather protection.

    • 6

Apply plastic shrink wrap to any glass display windows. But be sure measurements are precise and plastic is adhered without wrinkles.
