Instructions

    • 1

Shop around for space-saving furniture such as a loft and desk that fits underneath. You will also need a bookshelf or crate. Realize that dorm beds need different size linens than regular sized beds.

    • 2

Purchase an MP3 with headphones so you can drown out noise and enjoy your favorite music or play recorded lectures without disturbing your roommates.

    • 3

Pick out a dorm that fits your lifestyle. You may want to steer clear of coed for the first few years. If you are serious about your studies, pick a dorm that has a reputation for being quieter with a strict lights out schedule and supervision. If you are a loner, consider getting a single. However, if you are a group or party person, you may not mind sharing with 2 or 3 others to save costs and share responsibilities. You may wish to have a dorm that is more relaxed if you are not as serious of a college student.

    • 4

Tour the dorm ahead of time so you know what to expect. This will reduce stress later on when it comes time to move in.

    • 5

Have the move-in schedule for the dorm handy. Know where all the entrances, exits and parking structures and facilities are located.

    • 6

Bring some items that will make your new home feel like home. Decorate your area to your tastes and do not forget the pictures. You can also bring along scrapbooks, DVDs or videos.

    • 7

Ask your parents or siblings to send or bring care packages and visit you at the dorms. Set up meeting times and visitation ahead of time so it is sure to happen.

    • 8

Let your parents, friends and coworkers know about open house times at the dorm so they can see where you live.

    • 9

Find out if a meal plan is included with your dorm stay and what vacation or summer policies are.
