How to Handle a Full-Time Job & Attend College

Whether you attend school full time or part time, you'll find that balancing your studies and a full-time job can be a lot to manage. You'll need to juggle coursework and daily class schedules with the rigors of work. But you won't be alone: The portion of college students aged 16 to 24 who also work full- or part-time has increased to 57 percent from 49 percent since 1984, according to a 2001 study commissioned by Upromise. You can succeed both at work and in the classroom with the proper planning, organization, and drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Be organized. Keep a calendar of your school assignments and your work schedule, and revisit it as often as possible. Be disciplined and fight the urge to procrastinate.

    • 2

Get your friends and family on board. Recruit them as your cheerleaders and to encourage you if they notice you're slacking off.

    • 3

Budget your time well. Figure out ways to create more pockets of time in your schedule to attend to your schoolwork. Wake up earlier a few days each week, spend half of your lunch break doing research for class, or get some reading done on the bus or train on the way to work in the morning, for instance.

    • 4

Reward yourself. Don't get burned out by your rigorous schedule. Find time to relax.

    • 5

Look for ways to integrate work projects with school projects and vice versa.

    • 6

Register for night classes or courses that meet only one or two days a week. Alternatively, change your work schedule to accommodate your school schedule, if possible.

    • 7

Re-evaluate things after each semester. Determine whether attending school full time is right for you. You might want to consider a certificate-based program or professional-development classes instead.
