Healthy College Diets

There is a reason why they say that a college freshman gains an honorary 15 pounds when they first go off to school. When you don't have the comfort of home-cooked food every night, it can be difficult to stay healthy. Healthy college diets are not difficult to master; make healthy eating choices. Only a few key elements allow you to stay healthy while away at school, and they are not difficult to master.
  1. Do Your Body a Favor--Eat Breakfast

    • College students put their bodies and brains through a lot. The least you can do for your poor tired body is to put fuel into it first thing in the morning. It doesn't have to be anything major, since fruit, oatmeal, cereal or yogurt are all great breakfast options that can be consumed while on the go. Eating breakfast helps you to stay more alert and focused throughout the day; it speeds up the metabolism and can make the afternoon easier to get through when you are forced to skip your lunch.

    Keep Healthy Snacks on Hand

    • When you're burning the midnight oil and hunger strikes, the call of the vending machine down the hallway can be tempting. Stock up on healthy snacks, so it is easier to resist the temptation. Fruit, crackers, even a few sweets--these are all much better ideas than the calorie-loaded junk that most college campuses have to offer during off-hours.

    Lay Off the Liquor

    • Alcohol provides two things, carbohydrates and calories. Unfortunately, it doesn't offer much else in regard to nutrients. While it is okay to indulge every now and again, the notorious "freshman 15" likely owes its notoriety to college-style binge drinking. It may be fun for a while, but it's bad for the body and for your metabolism in particular.

    Make Wise Fast-Food Choices

    • That's right--fast food is okay sometimes. It is made to be portable, and there is no disputing its convenience. When you must eat fast food, get the chicken sandwich instead of the half-pound burger with extra cheese. Get the apple slices instead of the fries. Get fresh mushrooms instead of that extra cheese on your favorite pizza. Little things can make a big difference.
