Go on the Federal Student Aid website at https://dlenote.edu.gov /empn/index.jsp. This will bring you to the Master Promissory Note website.
Approve the disclosure and consent form. This will confirm that you agree to use an electronic MPN.
Provide the name of your school and your full legal name. If you are taking out a loan on behalf of your child, then you will need to provide your full legal name, the student’s name, social security number, date of birth, and school information. You will be able to modify this later if you have made mistakes.
Choose the type of loan that you have, such as subsidized, unsubsidized or grant plus. If you choose the wrong type of loan, you will need to begin this process again, as you will need one MPN per type of loan that you receive.
Provide additional information, like your (the borrower’s) permanent address, driver’s license number, state, email address, and a valid telephone number.
Enter references, including their contact information. You need to know your references for more than three years. Depending on the type of lender, they may or may not check these references. If they do, it is imperative that your reference be available to speak by telephone.
Review the drafted version of the MPN, making sure that all information is correct. If you need to make any changes, do so, and then read the draft again. Before you continue the electronic Master Promissory Note, you will need to confirm that you have read the rights and responsibilities of the borrower.
Sign your Master Promissory Note with your pin number from the Department of Education and your typed name. This signature acts as your promise to repay your student loan.
Review the signed MPN and enter the applicable confirmation code.
Confirm the acceptance of the terms and conditions for an MPN in order to submit the MPN to the federal student aid office. You will be given a final opportunity to make modifications to your account. If you agree and hit confirm, your MPN process is complete.
Print a copy of the MPN for your records and save a copy on your computer so you can retrieve it as needed at a later date.
